Abstract

This dissertation examines the shifting of gender roles in Islamic Boarding School (pesantren). The questions raised in this study are (1) How is the concept of gender understood by Nyai in Islamic Boarding School of Al-Amien Putri 1 Prenduan districts of Pragaan and Islamic Boarding School of Tahfidz Al-Ifadah Cangkreng districts of Lenteng Sumenep? (2) How is the shift in gender roles that occur in Islamic Boarding School of Al-Amien Putri 1 Prenduan districts of Pragaan and Islamic Boarding School of Tahfidz Al-Ifadah Cangkreng districts of Lenteng Sumenep? (3) What are the implications of the shift in gender roles to the role of Nyai in Islamic Boarding School of Al-Amien Putri 1 Prenduan districts of Pragaan and Islamic Boarding School of Tahfidz Al-Ifadah Cangkreng districts of Lenteng Sumenep?.Using a system theory and a phenomenological approach, this study produced findings. First, Nyai understood gender as the result of a tolerant understanding, thus allowing flexibility in the mindset in realizing equality and fairness in roles. On the other hand, gender is also understood as a movement to achieve harmony, with the understanding that women's empowerment (Bu Nyai) as a form of independence, is important in creating harmonious relations. Second, the shift in gender roles that occurred in al-Amien putri 1 pondok pesantren and Tahfidz al-Ifadah pesantren can be found in several objects, namely: Institutional leadership patterns that are more democratic and responsive to women. More harmonious family management. Community organizations that empower women. Third, the shift in gender roles that occurred in al-Amien putri 1 pondok pesantren and Tahfidz al-Ifadah pondok pesantren has implications for improving the quality of Nyai in the two pesantren, this is evident from the independence and success of Nyai in managing several roles (both roles in household and public role) which one of the factors is the positive response from the community both from the internal and external circles of the pesantren. The second implication is the creation of an ideal relationship between Nyai, Kyai, and other pesantren components, which is evident from the harmonization of roles and cooperation between the components in both pesantren.
