Abstract

This study aims to discuss the infidelity of Meriel and Dr. Asher in “What is Remembered” short story and Miranda and Dev in “Sexy” short story. This study also explains the factors that cause of infidelity in both stories. This study focuses on three problem statements, such as; (1) How is the infidelity in the two stories described? (2) What is the factor that causes of infidelity? (3) What are the similarities and differences of the infidelity in both stories? This study used a descriptive qualitative method to give more details about the analysis. This study applied a new criticism theory about character and characterization to describe the character who cheats in both short stories. Another tool used was a sociological approach. The sociological approach used was a theory that covered the reasons for the occurrence of infidelity. This study also applied a comparative approach to find the similarities and the differences of infidelity in both short stories. The result of the study shows that in “What is Remembered” Meriel has infidelity with Dr. Asher and in “Sexy” story Dev has infidelity with Miranda. This study also shows the factors that cause the occurrence of infidelity in both stories are due to circumstances. The factor of the circumstance in “What is Remembered” is when Meriel visited her aunt who is escorted by another man, namely Dr. Asher. In “Sexy”, the factor of the circumstance is Dev, who is in a long-distance relationship with his wife. The last, there are three similarities and differences between the two stories. Those are about: (1) characterization, Meriel and Dev have a selfish nature, (2) The factor that causes of infidelity, the factor that causes infidelity due to circumstance and (3) types of infidelity, in “What is Remembered” there is non-sexual infidelity and in “Sexy” has a Sexual infidelity.
