Abstract
In this study, the writer analyzes the impact of the Calcutta plague on the social conditions of society in the novel Empty World by John Christopher. In this novel, it is told that the changes caused by the Calcutta plague were terrible and made the plague a killing machine with a swift and wide spread. This study aims to describe to the reader the impact of the plague, which not only has an impact on public health. It also impacts the economic conditions, education, and social life of people in the world. This study uses a qualitative method. This study also uses the theory of sociology of literature to describe the impact caused by the plague. A detailed explanation of what a plague is is also included so that this research can be adequately understood. The writer collects quotes and narrations about the impact of the Calcutta plague on the social conditions of society in the novel Empty World. The results of this study show how the Calcutta plague spread. Then the plague brings negative impact to the society in London that are many people killed. Short of food supply, Loss of trust in others, and Extreme rat population explosion.
