Abstract
This thesis entitled Continuity and Discontinuity of Education of Perhimpunan Al-Irsyad Al-Islamiyyah in East Java in 1919-1984 (case studies in Surabaya, Banyuwangi, and Bondowoso) is a historical research that focuses on the problem of the development of Al-Irsyad education in East Java in 1919 to 1984 especially the physically and curriculum sectors, and the phenomenon of continuity and discontinuity that occurred in that time. This thesis uses historical research methods as a research framework. It is consist of four stages of research, they are heuristic (collection of sources), verification (criticism of sources), interpretation (interpretation), and historiography (historical writing). The data that used in this study are textual sources produced by the administrators of Al-Irsyad as well as by previous researchers, and oral sources from actors and witnesses to the history of the development of Al-Irsyad education in East Java. This research uses historical and sociological approaches. The theoretical perspectives and concepts used are role theory, concept of social institutions (organizations), and concept of continuity and discontinuity. Based on the results of the study, it was concluded that the educational development of Al-Irsyad in East Java from 1919 to 1984 was linear in the physical building and dynamic in the curriculum aspect. In the formative period (1919-1947) Al-Irsyad's education used a curriculum that was completely made by the administrators. In the adaptive period (1947-1984), the curriculum used was the government curriculum as the main curriculum. The continuity and discontinuity occur in aspects of learning materials and school style. Continuity occurs in the learning of Islam and Arabic which is maintained. Discontinuity occurs in the style of schools that were previously Arabism pattern and the cadre of educators became inclusive and normative without any particular orientation.
