Abstract

This study focused on determine female’s inferiority and black women’s voice in Spunk – The Selected Stories of Zora Neale Hurston and Under the Bridge by Zora Neale Hurston are in accordance with Feminism Approach in the First Wave “The Second Sex” by Simone Du Beauvoir. This research has two statement of the problem: the first is why female’s inferiority appear in The Black Female main characters and the second is how Black Female’s voice in Hurston’s selected short stories that used in this thesis. This study employed descriptive qualitative method. New criticism are applied to describe and analysed data in the form of phrases, sentences, dialogues, and statements that described the protagonist's feelings and behaviour. To analyse the data about Black People’s Marital relationships the researcher uses Feminism Approach in the First Wave “The Second Sex” by Simone Du Beauvoir and also the theory of Patriachy.The results showed that in Zora Neale Hurston’s short stories analysed in this thesis, there are three problems that causes female inferiority. They are male dominance, third person in relationship, and woman’s insecurities. These marital problem causes different impact to each couple in these short stories.
