Abstract

This thesis aims to analyze the personality development of Caroline in the Result May Vary by Bethany Chase. This novel is a romance novel that tells about Caroline. Caroline (Adam’s wife) is a museum curator. They have been together for sixteen years. Caroline always thought that she knows everything about Adam, but her husband lies and hides something from her. One day, Caroline discovered that her husband was having an affair with a man named Patrick. Caroline feels angry and betrayed because of Adam. Then, begins envisioning her life without the relationship and she must decide to face her future without him. Therefore, this research concentrates on three main questions; (1) how is Caroline's personality described before having the conflict? (2) what is Caroline's reaction to facing the conflict? (3) how is Caroline's personality described after having the conflict? This research uses a qualitative approach to explain the use of a clear and systematic description of Caroline's characterization and personality development of Caroline. Data was collected by reading the novel first until the researcher deeply understood the story. Then, the researcher collected and analyzed the data based on New Criticism and Personality Development as the leading theory to analyze the data. The conclusion of this research reveals Caroline's characterizations before and after the conflict and Caroline's reaction in facing the conflict. Before having the conflict, Caroline's personality shows that she is very selfish, inconsiderate, and stubborn. When conflict happens, Caroline shows some reactions she is getting mad, feeling sad, feeling betrayed, investigating her husband’s affair, and filing for divorce with Adam. However, after experiencing the conflict, Caroline's personality changes. She became someone who cares about others, has a lot of time with her family, trusts her family, and is cooperative. Even though she faces conflict in her marriage, she becomes better and more mature.
