Abstract

This research examines the types of conversational implicatures and flouting maxims by each character in the “Moon Knight” TV Series. There are several research questions studied including: (1) What are the types of conversational implicature that are found in the “Moon Knight” TV series, (2) What are the flouting maxims of conversational implicature used in the “Moon Knight” TV series. The researcher used a descriptive qualitative approach method. A descriptive qualitative approach using conversational implicature theory and Grice's flouting maxim was also used to obtain appropriate data speech analysis. These utterances are taken from the transcription of the “Moon Knight” TV Series” which has been carefully examined to obtain the proper data needed. The result of this study, the researcher found two types of conversational implicatures and four types of flouting maxims contained in speech. In detail, seventeen utterances out of twenty-nine contain conversational implicatures and flouting maxims uttered by each character. Based on data analysis, the most dominant is generalized conversational implicature rather than particularized conversational implicature. This is because listeners do not need special knowledge to know the meaning of what the speaker says. Apart from that, there are four types of flouting maxim with a total of twelve utterances with the same nominal, namely flouting maxim of manner with four utterances, flouting maxim of quality with four utterances, flouting maxim of quantity with two utterances, and flouting maxim of relevance with two utterances.
