Abstract

The interpretation of the Quran is conducted by experts known as mufassir, with the aim of educating the public and evaluating religious practices to distinguish between correct and incorrect or even misleading religious teachings. Mufassir must meet specific criteria and understand the principles of exegesis, which not all Muslims can engage in. Therefore, the Quran should be protected from erroneous or incorrect thought patterns. Respecting the authority of recognized mufassir is a crucial step in maintaining the integrity of the Quranic message and minimizing the potential for distortion in religious understanding and practice. In the context of Islamic scholarship in Indonesia, many scholars attempt to interpret the Quran, including Agus Mustofa. His unconventional approach to interpreting the Quran makes his works controversial among both academics and the general public. This study adopts a qualitative approach to analyze the necessary data. To obtain information related to the research variables, a literature review is conducted, encompassing the works of Agus Mustofa, the works of Nusantara exegesis, and other Quranic exegesis literature. Additionally, interviews were conducted with Agus Mustofa himself. The analysis involves three main steps: data reduction (summarizing and selecting data), data display (presenting data), and conclusion drawing and verification (drawing conclusions and verification). The findings of this study indicate that Agus Mustofa's approach to Quranic exegesis is less accurate. He introduced a new term for the method of Quranic exegesis by the Quran, called the puzzle method. However, in practice, his method of Quranic exegesis by the Quran differs from the interpretation of the majority of mufassir. The implementation of Agus Mustofa's methodology in Quranic exegesis by the Quran appears to lack sufficient attention. Agus Mustofa's interpretative patterns are greatly influenced by sophistic thought, characterized by skepticism and relativism.
