Abstract

Giving gratitude applies to all levels of people who interact in society either, it is expressed directly by using spoken or indirectly using written. The way of delivering gratitude can also be affected by cultural expectations, social norms, and socio-cultural convention. The purposes of this study are to identify the moves of acknowledgment in the English Language Education Department thesis of UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya and compare the move structure of acknowledgment to the structure proposed by Hyland. To find the answer, this was qualitative study and used the primary data of five English Language Education Department Students’ thesis acknowledgments. The results show that English Language Education Department students who graduated in August 2018 do not have the rhetorical move on thesis acknowledgment proposed by Hyland’s theory. They have differences in the rhetorical move in their acknowledgment thesis. It was found that some acknowledgment thesis began by praising and thanking God and prophet, another was not. It indicates that they have less information about the structure of a good acknowledgment thesis. Other than that, the findings also revealed that there is an element of religiosity in acknowledgment in the academic context of EFL in Indonesia.
