Abstract

This research aims to investigate the type of figurative language used in Taylor Swift's song on the album "Speak Now" uses figurative language theory by Laurence Perrine. Two problems were solved in this research: (1) what are the types of figurative language found in the song lyrics in the album "Speak Now" (2) what is the contextual meaning of each song used in the album "Speak Now." The researcher used qualitative methods to analyze the topic of this discovery. Data collection was carried out by first downloading the lyrics of the songs on the album "Speak Now" by Taylor Swift. After collecting the data, the researcher then checked the validity of the lyrics with the original version in the Spotify application. After that, the researcher read while understanding each song lyric on the album. Finally, the researcher sorted and divided which lyrics contain figurative language. The result of this study is that the researcher found ten types of figurative language in the song lyrics on Taylor Swift's "Speak Now" album and proved that metaphors appear the most. The researcher also studied and explained the various intentions and meanings contained in the songs so that readers could understand what the songwriter meant. In addition, the researcher also explained the contextual meaning in the lyrics of the songs in the album "Speak Now" and found that all of them have their own characteristics and have a deep meaning.
