Abstract

Literature review is an important thing in a thesis; it is a description of the literature relevant to a particular field or topic. To write literature review is not easy; students need strategy to develop a good review of literature. This research aimed to investigate the features of analysis tasks in students’ literature review of students’ thesis in English Language Education Department UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya. Using document analysis, this research took the data from four students’ English theses that have graduated and finished in 2018 and 2019. Two theses were qualitative and the others were quantitative/ experimental. The analysis of the form of analysis tasks of literature review was based on Matt Weiss’s theory including four analysis tasks of literature review: summary, synthesize, critique, and compare. To obtain comprehensive data, this research analyzed the content of the words, with the help of Antconc as software that can show and find word lists of the data. The finding of this research showed that literature review of students’ English thesis in the university have reached the criteria of analysis task of literature review on Matt Weiss’s theory. The features of the analysis task of literature review used include summary (34.3%), synthesize (2.9%), critique (5.7%), and compare (57.1%). While the students have used all the four analysis tasks of literature review, the main task used is summarizing and comparing. This indicates that students need to be guided and given more practice to synthesize and criticize existing literature relevant to their theses for better and richer review of literature in their theses.
