Abstract

Students learning ESP must be equipped with sufficient knowledge of disciplinary vocabulary when focusing on disciplinary English. The use of corpora in the ESP context is deemed necessary. This study used quantitative content analysis. The focus of the study is to investigate the varieties of corpora in English for Islamic studies. Taking the source of data from three books of English for Islamic studies, this study explored the differences and similarity of the corpora in the books published by three reputable Islamic universities in Indonesia. The data was analyzed using AntConc. The first findings show several corpora between the three books, such as Corpora from UINSA, UMM, and IAIN Walisongo book. Moreover, there are ten Islamic words and ten function words related to Islamic studies. Second, findings show that the three books share differences, including the use of different words referring to the same meaning and use frequency of the same words, indicating different emphases of the materials in the book. Third, findings also show that the three books share similarities in the use of words about Islam, such as “Islam, Muslim, Prophet, Allah, God, Muhammad, Islamic, Al-Qur'an, Religion, and Fasting.” The findings can serve as a reference for those learning English for Islamic studies particularly those in Indonesian ESP focusing on Islamic studies.
