Abstract
The purpose of this study is to find out the types of causes of marital conflicts and analyze how the characters face or resolve the cause of conflicts depicted in the novel The Course of Love by Alain de Botton. The novel The Course of Love tells the love story of Rabih and Kirsten, a married couple who have been married for 13 years. The novel explores various aspects of marital relationships such as the beginning of falling in love, the challenges faced before and after marriage, and how to keep love and households afloat. The novel elaborates how success in love requires a deep understanding of oneself and one's partner, as well as a readiness to commit and grow together. In this study, the author answers the formulation of the problems in this research, namely (1) How are marital conflicts in Rabih’s relationship portrayed in the novel The Course of Love? (2) What is the factor that causes conflicts in Rabih's marital relationship portrayed in the novel The Course of Love? (3) How does Rabih deal with the causes of marital conflict in the relationship? This study uses a qualitative descriptive method. This method is used to describe and get a valid picture of marital conflict in relationships that occur in the novel The Course of Love. The analysis is related to the causes of marital conflict that occurs in the novel therefore this research uses new criticism since the analysis is about the conflict that occurs in the novel. The data are collected from the narratives and conversations from the novels, that depicted the conflict in Rabih’s relationship and how to deal with the conflict. Related to the object of research in the novel by Alain de Botton by marking sentences, in several paragraphs that show marital conflict in the relationship. The results show that the marital conflict in Rabih’s relationship included adultery, emotional strain, financial imbalances, and infidelity. The cause of marital conflict in Rabih's relationship is due to the presence of the following: differences of opinion, avoiding the problem, lies, infidelity, high expectations, and negative thinking. Rabih faced the causes of marital conflict in relationships in the following stages of resolution: consultation with therapists, being more mature for a better future and being more ready for marriage life (reflecting on marriage, the process that happens after marriage).
