Abstract
This study aims to analyze Rosaline's efforts to save Juliet from Romeo's manipulation in Natasha Solomon's Fair Rosaline (2023). Rosaline Capulet and Juliet Capulet are cousins born into a family with a strong patriarchal culture. The novel Fair Rosaline is inspired by the drama Romeo and Juliet with the background of events in Verona, which was hit by a plague that caused a difficult economic situation. After her mother died, her father wanted to send Rosaline to a convent to save her family's finances. Rosaline, who did not want to go to the convention, asked for 12 days to postpone her departure and experience new events in her life. The researcher found three problems in this study; (1) How are the main characters portrayed, (2) How is the relationship between Rosaline, Romeo, and Juliet, and (3) How is Rosaline's effort to save Juliet from Romeo's manipulation. The researcher analyzed Rosaline's characterization and efforts using the New Criticism theory. This study uses a qualitative method to find and describe Rosaline's characterization, the relationship between the three of them and Rosaline's efforts to save Juliet. The researcher obtained data from the book Fair Rosaline to analyze those issues. After finding data for both issues, the researcher conducted an in-depth analysis of the data and described it. Then, the researcher concluded the findings. The researcher found that Rosaline is described as has a brave and adventurous soul with strong determination, and she is full of curiosity and responsibility. Rosaline also indirectly connects Romeo and Juliet. In addition, Rosaline's efforts to convince Juliet that Romeo has a wild and cruel nature are also carried out a lot, including making plans for Romeo to drink his poison. With the nature and efforts made by Rosaline, she can change the fate of Juliet and other women to avoid Romeo.
