Abstract

This research, titled "Shame as a Moral Entity in Islam (A Study of Ma'ani al-Hadith in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith Index No. 4181)", aims to explore and analyze the concept of shame as an ethical value in Islam through the ma'ani al-hadith approach to hadith number 4181 in the book of Sunan Ibn Majah. Shame, regarded as a branch of faith in Islam, is the focus of this study to understand its essence, position, and application in the daily lives of Muslims. The research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach. Primary data is derived from hadith number 4181 in the Sunan Ibn Majah, while secondary data involves various literature on hadith interpretation, Islamic ethical texts, and perspectives from classical and contemporary scholars. The analysis utilizes the ma'ani al-hadith approach to deeply interpret the meanings contained within the hadith, considering linguistic, contextual, and contemporary relevance. The findings reveal that the concept of shame in Islam is not solely related to individual subjective feelings but also encompasses social and spiritual dimensions. Shame as a moral entity plays a significant role in maintaining individual morality and societal harmony. The study also identifies that the value of shame in Islam is grounded in balance—shame derived from faith in Allah without hindering courage in speaking the truth or seeking knowledge. This research is expected to contribute to contextual and relevant hadith comprehension, particularly in the study of Islamic ethics, and serve as a reference for developing ethical values in the lives of Muslim communities.
