Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyse the word formation processes and essential meanings of the register used by commentator during the Korea Republic vs. Indonesia quarterfinal match in the AFC U23 Asian Cup Qatar 2024. A descriptive qualitative research approach was employed to conduct this study, supported by Halliday's (2004) register theory to analyze the data. The data for this study were obtained from full match videos available on the AFC Asian Cup YouTube channel. The researcher meticulously watched the match multiple times to gather data and thoroughly understand the flow of the game. The commentator's speech was transcribed, and the accuracy of the transcription was verified through repeated listening. The focus of this research was to identify and classify the linguistic register forms used during critical moments of the match between South Korea and Indonesia. These forms were categorized based on word formation processes by Yule (2010). Those are coinage, borrowing, compounding, blending, clipping, backformation, conversion, acronym, derivation and multiple processes. A total of thirty(30) data points were identified across different word formation processes. The most dominant word formation process found in this research is the compound process with eighteen (18) data. then coversion four(4) data, acronym three(3) data, clipping two(2) data. Then each borrowing, derivation, and multiple process one(1) data. The findings highlight the effectiveness of using concise and precise language to maintain a smooth and relevant narrative flow. This approach allows commentator to help viewers comprehend critical moments in the match without losing focus on the ongoing action. Additionally, the use of these terms demonstrates the commentator's linguistic skill in selecting appropriate language to describe actions on the field clearly and effectively, enhancing the overall viewing experience for the audience.
