Abstract
This research examines the manifestation of the parental involvements on students’ motivation on their selection of English major. There are two types of motivation such as intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. This research was conducted based on the urge of parental involvement-based motivation and it remains to be underexplored along with the scope of the students’ motivation regarding what they experienced in parental involvement. By examining those topics, it aims to have (1) the insights towards what types of parental involvements in students’ English college education major selection; (2) the students’ opinion on the influence of the parental involvement; and (3) knowing the types of motivation of students during their selection of English college education major. The approach of this research is descriptive quantitative approach and the design is a survey research that examine and interpret the data into a comprehensive discussion. The results that relate to the research questions mention that there are parental involvement types in the students’ selection of the English major which first because of (1) facilitation and provision; (2) encouragement and outcomes for motivation; (3) command and reinforcement; (4) praise and reward; (5) and parents as model and inspirator. The result of students’ opinion on the parents’ influence in the students’ motivation to select an English major because of parents’ (1) facilitation; (2) praise and reward; (3) command and reinforcement; (4) encouragement and outcomes for motivation; and last is (5) modeling and inspiration. Furthermore, students are known to have more intrinsic motivation and less motivation by outside factors even though extrinsic motivation is considered to be highly impactful.
