Abstract

The development of ICT in learning is one of the advancements in the world of education. Teachers and students are expected to utilize ICT to support the learning process so that it is optimal, especially in the context of learning English. With the use of technology or ICT in learning, the activities that appear will be more varied, one of which is the use of ICT as an icebreaker. The purpose of this study was to find out how lecturers use ICT as an icebreaker and students' opinions about using ICT as a means of icebreaker activity in the CALL class at UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya. The researchers used qualitative methods with interview guidelines and questionnaires to collect data. The data was processed with a 6-step analysis adapted from Creswell. The results show that the lecturer used several stages and preparations in using ICT as an icebreaker. These preparations include technical preparation and material preparation. Technical preparation includes matters related to ICT, such as Wi-Fi, computers that can be used, smartphones, and others. Material preparation is the preparation of materials related to and suitable for icebreaking activies. Then the stages of using ICT in ice breakers can be done if the preparations of teachers and students have been fulfilled. In addition, the results of the study found students' opinions related to their attractiveness when using ICT as icebreaking through data that has been collected based on a questionnaire, another results that students felt that by using ICT as icebreaking, they could understand the material easily. Moreover, the study results found benefits and challenges in using ICT as an icebreaker which were collected through interviews.
