Abstract

This study aims to analyze the conflict dynamics experienced by the main character named Quinn in the novel Excuse Me While I Ugly Cry by Joya Goffney, published in 2021. The focus of the study is directed at three main problems, namely: (1) how the characterization of Quinn's character is depicted in the novel's narrative, (2) what types of conflicts Quinn faces, and (3) how the main character carries out the conflict resolution. The approach used in this research is descriptive qualitative, with an emphasis on systematic and in-depth exposure to the phenomena studied through text analysis. This method is applied in the form of a descriptive study of relevant quotations that describe the characterization of characters and conflicts in the novel. This research uses New Criticism to analyze the conflict faced by Quinn as the main character. The researcher also uses the theory of character and characterization to discuss the characterization of the main character. The results of this study explain that Quinn experiences internal and external conflicts. Quinn's characterization as an individual who is not confident and has fears within herself becomes a dominant factor in the emergence of these conflicts. In the end, conflict resolution was successfully achieved through the support of the closest people who helped Quinn in the process of recovery and self-acceptance.
