Abstract

This research focuses on the analysis of politeness strategies used by the main male and female in the movie Sherlock Holmes (2009) and Enola Holmes (2020). The researcher conducts the study based on the theory of Brown and Levinson (1987), which has 4 types of politeness strategies, namely: bald-on record, positive, negative and off-record. Based on the transcript, the two main characters with the different gender identities have the similarity and the difference. In terms of similarity, the researcher found that both main characters amploy all four types of politeness strategies. Meanwwhile, regarding the difference, the author found that female main character is more expressive with her emotion when speaking than male main character.
