Abstract

This research aims to identify the types of implicature in sarcasm, as well as the role of humor elements present in the movie Hacksaw Ridge. There are several research questions, including: (1) What types of implicature in sarcasm are used in the movie Hacksaw Ridge? (2) How does implicature in humor play a role in building relationships between characters in the movie Hacksaw Ridge? (3) What is the influence of implicature in sarcasm in alleviating tension in the movie Hacksaw Ridge?. The researcher addresses these issues using a descriptive qualitative approach. The descriptive qualitative approach, utilizing implicature theory from Yule (1996) and sarcasm theory from van Dijk (2008), were also employed to obtain accurate speech data analysis. The utterances were taken from the movie's transcripts, which have been carefully observed to gather the necessary data. This study found that there are three types of implicature in sarcasm and five types of sarcasm contained in the utterances. Specifically, there are forty-four utterances that contain types of implicature expressed by the characters in the movie Hacksaw Ridge. Based on the data analysis, the characters in the movie predominantly use generalized conversational implicature with twenty-one utterances, twenty particularized conversational implicatures, and three conventional implicatures. On the other hand, the characters in the movie predominantly use verbal sarcasm with four utterances, followed by three self-deprecating sarcasms, three situational sarcasms, and two playful sarcasms. The researcher did not find any instances of excessive sarcasm.
