Abstract

This research aims to analyse how the UK's maritime strategy moves in response to China's dominance in the Indo-Pacific region during the 2022-2023 period, using Julian Corbett's maritime strategy theory approach as the main analytical framework. This research uses a qualitative-descriptive method with a case study approach to the operational activities of the two ships, linked to Corbett's four main indicators of limited warfare: limited political object, focus on a strategic geographic object, ability to strategically isolate the object, and the existence of a secure home defence from unlimited counterattacks. The results showed that Britain's strategy fully reflected the maritime strategy approach. It does not seek to match China's power directly, but instead emphasises symbolic presence, strengthening military diplomacy and protecting international maritime lines of communication. The projection of sea power through HMS Tamar and HMS Spey is directed at creating strategic influence in the region, especially in areas targeted for Chinese expansion, such as the South China Sea and South Pacific countries. In addition, the UK is able to maintain domestic security from potential counter-attacks due to its geographical characteristics as an island nation and the support of global defence alliances.
