Abstract

This research aims to examine in depth the application of translation theories in the book of Tafsir al-Ibrīz by KH. Bisri Musthofa, a prominent cleric who is widely known for his contributions to regional-language Islamic treasures. This research specifically focuses on identifying translation methods, techniques and strategies applied by the author in translating the meaning of Al-Qur’an verses into Javanese that can be understood by the reading public, as well as evaluating the suitability of this approach with the principles of contemporary translation theory. In its implementation, this study uses a qualitative approach with content analysis methods as the main basis, which allows researchers to explore the depth of meaning and translation tendencies contained in interpretive texts. The main data source consists of excerpts from translations of the Al-Qur’an contained in al-Ibrīz, which were then studied through a comparative process against Arabic source texts. Supporting data was obtained from relevant academic literature, both from the realm of translation theory and local interpretive studies, in order to enrich the interpretive context and strengthen the theoretical basis of the research. The main findings in this study indicate that KH. Bisri Musthofa implements various translation methods and techniques, such as word-for-word translation methods, idiomatic translation, then correspondence techniques, explanations, expansions, concept substitution, borrowing and others. Apart from that, it appears that structural and semantic strategies are also used to adapt sentence structures and nuances of meaning to the Javanese context, without ignoring the sacredness of the source text. The author is not fixated on a purely literal approach, but actively considers the cultural context, audience characteristics, and local values that live in Javanese society. Thus, al-Ibrīz's tafsir is not only a work of translation, but also a form of contextual interpretation that combines linguistic sensitivity and religious understanding. Conceptually, this research emphasizes the importance of an interdisciplinary translation approach, namely one that combines linguistic theory with cultural and theological understanding. The balance between fidelity to the source text and acceptability in the target language is the main key in translating religious texts, especially the Koran. The implications of these findings highlight the urgency of developing local-based translation studies, as a form of contribution to the development of translation science in Indonesia. Apart from that, this approach also has the potential to strengthen strategies for conveying religious messages in a more inclusive, contextual and easily accessible manner to various levels of society, especially those who live in non-Arabic cultural and linguistic environments.
