Abstract

Motivation plays an essential role in learning a language. Students with good motivation seem to succeed in their learning, as they will find ways to support their learning. This study aims to investigate the motivational factors that drive Mathematics Education students enrolling in ESP course “Teaching Mathematics in English,” and the types of their motivation. Using a qualitative approach, the researcher interviewed two students with high and low academic achievement, and distributed questionnaires to 49 students. The findings revealed that students have both intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors. Intrinsic motivation was dominant driving students' desire to improve their English skills, actively participate in class, and succeed in the course. On the other hand, extrinsic motivation was influenced by the goals such as achieving good grades, preparing for future careers, and impressing the lecturers’ teaching style. Additionally, several key factors contributed to students’ motivation, including a sense of learning autonomy, a supportive and comfortable classroom environment, and engaging teaching methods. These results highlight the importance of teaching approaches that foster student autonomy and encourage active engagement in English for Specific Purposes courses. The findings suggest that lecturers should maintain and strengthen teaching approaches that foster active participation and student autonomy in English for Specific Purposes courses. Future research could broaden the focus to students from diverse programs for a more comprehensive understanding of ESP motivation in higher education.
