Abstract

This study aims to describe the use of figurative language in the song A Thousand Years by Cristina Perri and figurative language in the lyrics of the song Over Again by One Direction. The figurative language contained in the lyrics of the song A Thousand Years by Cristina Perri and the figurative language in the lyrics of the song Over Again by One Direction, were analyzed into two aspects, namely type, and meaning. The formulation of the research problem is 1. What are the figurative language styles contained in the lyrics of the song A Thousand Years by Cristina Perri and the lyrics of the song Over Again by One Direction ? 2. What is the meaning of the figurative language used in the lyrics of Cristina Perri's A Thousand Years and One Direction 's Over Again? This type of research is a qualitative research with content analysis method. This study uses a data validation technique in the form of persistence of observation. The data obtained will be described and then analyzed to obtain the figurative language style contained in the lyrics of the song A Thousand Years by Cristina Perri and the lyrics of the song Over Again by One Direction. This research data was collected through four stages. First, listening to Cristina Perri's A Thousand Years and Over Again by One Direction, second, reading and observing the lyrics of Cristina Perri's A Thousand Years and Over Again by One Direction, third, marking the sections related to the use of language style. The figurative language of Cristina Perri's A Thousand Years and the song Over Again by One Direction, fourth, notes the figurative language used in the lyrics of the song, and fifth, groups the figurative language that has been found. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the use of figurative language for the lyrics of the song A Thousand Years by Cristina Perri and the lyrics of the song Over Again by One Direction are as follows. Of the many types of figurative language styles that exist, it was found that there were twenty-five expressions containing figurative language styles in part. In the lyrics of the song A Thousand Years by Cristina Perri found simile (5), hyperbole (3), and personification (3). Then in the lyrics of the song Over Again by One Direction found simile language style (3), hyperbole language style (5), and personification language style (3), and metaphor language style (2). The dominant language style found in the second study of the song lyrics is the simile language style with a total of 9 figurative expressions.
