Abstract

The research aims to compare the differences in character and characterization between Pooh in the novel version and Pooh in the film adaptation version. Researchers used two objects, the novel Winnie the Pooh (1926) and the film Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey (2023). The novel Winnie the Pooh tells the story of Pooh and his friend on an adventure. However Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey tells the story of Pooh's terror towards Christoper Robin and other humans for dumping him. There are three problems to be solved in this research: (1) How is Pooh characterized in the novel Winnie the Pooh (2) How is Pooh characterized in the film Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey (3) Why do these differences emerge. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach to analyze the character of Pooh in both a novel and a film. Data were collected by highlighting dialogues and actions of characters in both formats. The researcher identified relevant excerpts from the novel and film and then compared Pooh's character and characterization in each. The analysis focused on the differences between the two character of Pooh in novel and film, explaining the causes of differences in media and intended purpose. The results of this study show that the character of Pooh in the novel Winnie the Pooh and in the film Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey have striking differences. Pooh in the novel potrayed as a funny, caring, optimistic, sympathetic, tough, silly, friendly and brave. However, Pooh in the film potrayed as a serious, cruel, pessimistic, antipathetic, tough, clever, rude, and brave. Subsequently, this difference is caused by the difference in media and the difference in author’s purpose.
