Abstract
This research aims to analyze gender representation in the film Mulan (2020), focusing on how gender inequality is represented through the language used by the characters in the film and how Mulan resists patriarchy through her actions. There are two problems to be solved in this study, namely: (1) How is gender inequality portrayed in the film Mulan (2020); and (2) What actions does Mulan take in the film Mulan (2020) to show her opposition to patriarchy. This research uses a qualitative approach to provide a clear and systematic description of the phenomenon under study. Descriptive study in textual analysis is applied to analyze the dialogue and characterization of the film. Data were collected by transcribing the movie Mulan (2020) and identifying words, phrases, sentences, and discourses related to gender representation and resistance to patriarchy. A total of 22 data were collected, with 19 data answering the first research question and 3 data answering the second research question. The analysis used Sara Mills' Feminist Stylistics theory (1995) and Judith Butler's Gender Performativity (1990). This study reveals that gender inequality in Mulan (2020) is represented through linguistic choices such as gender-biased pronouns, marked forms, and metaphors, which reinforce traditional gender roles and stereotypes. These are analyzed through three levels of Feminist Stylistics: words, phrases/sentences, and discourse. For the second research question, this study identifies Mulan's actions to oppose the patriarchy, such as disguising herself as a man to join the army, as a form of resistance to patriarchy that challenges and redefines her gender identity. The findings suggest that the movie Mulan (2020) both reflects and challenges patriarchal norms. By showing the power of language and action to represent the gender performativity from repeated socially constructed actions and challenge gender norms, where language and action are the main tools to fight patriarchy, as shown by Mulan's transformation from a submissive princess to a brave warrior. This study emphasizes the importance of critically analyzing media representations to understand and address gender inequality.
