Abstract

The study is aimed at investigating Language Style in the ‘Kung Fu Panda 4’ movie. This research analyzes the language style utterances used by the main characters in the movie. Therefore, the data in this research focuses on the main character’s utterance in the “Kung Fu Panda 4” movie. The research contains two problems. This study is based on the five language styles of Martin Joos’s theory (1967). The purpose of this study is to find the language style used by the main characters and to describe the factors that influence the main characters’ utterances using different styles. In this study, the research applied the descriptive-qualitative design. The data in this study is in the form of a “Kung Fu Panda 4” movie transcript. In this study, the researcher focused on the main characters’ utterances that contain 5 types of language styles, and the researcher determined the factors that influence the differences of the main characters used styles of language. The result of the research shows dialogues that included five language styles. In the research question, the data was found types of language styles used by the main characters in this movie, including, formal styles, consultative styles, casual styles, and ntimate styles. Five language styles are used by the main characters. In the second question, the research successfully reveals the factors that influence the main characters' use of different styles of language. The research analysis is based on the theory of Holmes (2008). The theory about four social factors that influence the main characters uses different styles of language. The first social factor: is the participant, in this movie the use of this factor is for close relationships or family members. The second is the topic. The topic the main characters utterance some places discussed or telling about the matter. The third factor is setting, this factor determines formal, semi-formal, and informal. The dialogue in the Kung Fu Panda 4 movie is often in the palace and on the journey. The last factor is the function of the main character's dialogue, this factor can reveal their purpose or show their intimacy. Another factor is the psychological factor; the purpose to fulfill the speaker’s personal needs, namely, feelings, closeness to someone, and the desire to show intimacy.
