Abstract
The research aims to analyze the types and functions of deixis in BLACKPINK Carpool Karaoke, which indicates the deixis in Rosé and James Corden’s utterances in the form of recorded interviews in an informal setting. This research analyzed two problems: (1) the types and functions of deixis used by Rosé in the talk show dialogue in BLACKPINK Carpool Karaoke, and (2) the types and functions of deixis used by James Corden in the talk show dialogue in BLACKPINK Carpool Karaoke. Descriptive qualitative approach were applied in this study to analyze the dialogues and utterances of each selected subject, Rosé and James Corden, through BLACKPINK Carpool Karaoke video. Data were collected first by transcribing the video of BLACKPINK Carpool Karaoke. The transcription was rechecked and matched with the video, and the types of deixis used by Rosé and James Corden were analyzed by identifying them according to the text spoken by the speakers. The analysis continued by identifying the functions that emerged from selected deixis in Rosé and James Corden’s utterances. This research reveals that only four types of deixis are found in the talk show. There are person deixis including first-person, second-person, and third-person deixis, then, temporal deixis, spatial deixis, and discourse deixis. Among the various deixis appear in talk shows, Rosé tends to use the person deixis “I,” which is included in the first person deixis. Rosé uses this deixis because of its relevance to the topic of the talk show, namely personal experience; she is telling her own experience. In addition, Rosé applies the person deixis "we” as an indicator of her identity as a member of a group. On the other hand, James Corden applies the person deixis “I” as a form of his role as a host of a talk show that he leads. Not only that, Corden uses the second person deixis “you” as his second dominant deixis to create a connection with the interlocutor and approach his guest as one of his roles as a host. As a native speaker, it is indeed straightforward to utilize and position deixis in a systematic and appropriate manner. This research contains five deictic functions in Rosé and James Corden’s utterances in BLACKPINK Carpool Karaoke. The deixis used in these utterances are to show identities and involvements, create the connection between the parties in the talk show, reduce ambiguity and uncertainty, structure narrative and conversation, and indicate the power and inspiration of BLACKPINK’s idol before they became artists.
