Abstract

This research aims to analyze the hidden meaning of the use of presupposition in utterances script in the movie entitled Allegiant. The process of investigating the hidden meaning of using Presupposition by Yule (1996). Two problems must be solved in this research: (1) What are the presuppositions found in the characters’ utterances in the movie entitled “Allegiant”; (2) How the use of presuppositions in the characters’ utterances be classified as relevance on the movie entitled “Allegiant”. Furthermore, the researcher adds the relevance theory by Wilson (1995) to better understand the production of assumptions, which correlates, and to prove that the assumptions produced are related to the existing context. Based on the qualitative descriptive method, the researcher uses content analysis to explore the hidden meanings among the existing assumptions. It can show a significant understanding of the meaning of assumption produced through presupposition. Moreover, researchers act as critical instruments in research and must understand the analysis procedure using the existing theory and method. Data collection is done by downloading the script and checking that the data is the appropriateness of utterances with the dialogue in the movie. Then, this was followed by identifying using the presupposition and the appearance of assumption in the data by matching with several types of presupposition. Based on each type of presupposition, data is classified again using relevance theory, which states that presupposition data correlates with the assumption corresponding with contextual effect and cognitive effort. The researcher presented the findings into two findings: the findings of presupposition in the utterances and relevance in presupposition. In the first finding, the researcher revealed 63 instances of presupposition, and the second finding exposed 17 presuppositions with high relevance. The use of presupposition has successfully shown the effective way to unpack the alternative or hidden meaning through the production of assumption. In addition, relevance theory can also make the production of existing assumptions proven to be true to be believed. Understanding the use of presupposition properly and correctly can reduce the risk of misinterpreting a meaning. Combining presupposition and relevance theory can be one method to understand hidden meanings in communication.
