Abstract

This study analyzes how the detective formula apply in the novel Sophie Hannah’s The Monogram Murders. This study examines how the classic structure of the detective story is maintained but also enriched with new elements. The researcher answers the following problem formulations: (1) How does The Monogram Murders apply the formula concept in detective theory, and (2) How is the innovation of detective structure apply in the novel The Monogram Murders. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with an analysis method based on close reading of the novel. The analysis begins by identifying the classic elements of a detective story, such as plot structure, detective investigation methods, and the role of the detective, then comparing them with the modifications that appear in the novel. These elements are analyzed using John G. Cawelti’s classic detective formula theory to see how the novel’s structure is maintained and adapted. The study shows that The Monogram Murders maintains the basic structure of a classic detective story but also presents several innovations. This novel still follows the classic detective story pattern with mysterious crimes, systematic investigation processes, and surprising case revelations. The detective still plays the role of a puzzle solver, while the case is revealed dramatically at the end of the story. However, Sophie Hannah provides differences in several aspects, such as the depiction of the first situation, the division of roles in the investigation, the final resolution that does not entirely follow the classic detective pattern, and the absence of the mistaken suspect element. This study concludes that The Monogram Murders still maintains the elements contained in the classic detective formula while providing variations in several aspects of the structure of the story.
