Abstract

This study aims to analyze the characters and characterization of the main characters in the novel entitled A Man with A White Shadow by Vikram Suryawanshi and explore the moral values that emerge in the novel. The novel A Man with A White Shadow by Vikram Suryawanshi tells the psychological and emotional conflict between two brothers, Arjun and Karan, who grew up together but took different paths in life due to social pressure and family expectations. This study answers two research questions which include: (1) How is Arjun and Karan portrayed in the novel A Man with A White Shadow? And (2) How do Arjun and Karan’s characterizations reveal the moral value in A Man with A White Shadow?. The descriptive qualitative approach is used by the researcher. In analyzing the novel A Man with A White Shadow, the researcher used the New Criticism theory. New criticism was used to describe the characteristics of Karan and Arjun and reveal the moral values that emerge from the contrasting characteristics between Karan and Arjun. The data of this research is Vikran Suryawanshi’s A Man with A White Shadow. Then, the researcher included additional data in this study derived from books, journal articles, and relevant theses to support the research analysis. The analysis focused on character depiction and interpretation of moral values that emerged from their behavioral differences. The results of this study reveal the characterization of Karan and Arjun and the moral values created from their contrasting characteristics in the novel. Karan’s characterization is insecure, struggleful, and humane. Meanwhile, Arjun’s characterization is confident, successful, and egoistic. There are several moral values found in the novel. These are the values of parental love for children, the value of helping others, the value of concern for others, the value of courage, and the value of friendship.
