Abstract

This research aims to analyze the literary work of the novel The Last White Man by Mohsin Hamid, which presents Hegemony. The researcher relates Post-Colonialism theory and analyzes it through White Supremacy based on Hegemony by Gramsci (1971). Therefore, in this study, the author answers the formulation of the problems, namely: (1) How does the main character experience self-transformation in the novel The Last White Man by Mohsin Hamid (2) What are the impacts of self-transformation experienced by the main character in the novel The Last White Man by Mohsin Hamid. This research focuses on two main aspects, namely the transformation of the characterization of the main character who undergoes skin color transformation. Regarding the concept, it analyzes the main character's self-transformation and the impacts experienced by the main character. Using a qualitative descriptive method shows how Hegemony based on White Supremacy occurs against the backdrop of life influenced by post-colonialism in the novel. The data is gathered through the analysis of several texts within the novel. This is followed by analyzing and identifying each stage of the passage that shows the ongoing transformation and impacts experienced by the main character, as directly identified by the researcher. Each transformation and impact is further developed through the storyline experienced by the main character in the novel. The results show several transformations: body colour transformation, identity transformation, self-trust transformation, and accepting his personality transformation. In addition, there is also the impact of the transformations experienced: hiding from society, society keeping distance, his co-workers do not know him, and experiencing racism. The use of Hegemony in the storyline of The Last White Man aims to make readers more aware and accepting of differences in society as a normal occurrence, while also helping them realize that humans are not always created the same as others.
