Abstract

The study is aimed at analyzing the character development of Arthur Leywin in the early volumes of TurtleMe’s web novel The Beginning After the End. This study focuses on the transformation of Arthur’s personality after his reincarnation from his former life as King Grey. There are three problems to be solved in this study, namely: (1) how Arthur was portrayed before reincarnation; (2) how Arthur was portrayed after reincarnation; and (3) what factors cause the change in Arthur’s personality. This study uses a qualitative approach. This method was applied to examine Arthur Leywin’s characterization in Volumes 1 to 3 of The Beginning After the End. The data were collected through close reading of the novel by identifying narration, dialogue, and monologue related to Arthur’s personality traits. The analysis was conducted by applying New Criticism to examine the characterization. This study reveals that Arthur Leywin’s character development is strongly influenced by his past life as King Grey, whose traits include an obsession with power, emotional detachment, and pragmatic thinking. However, after reincarnation, Arthur gradually develops new personality traits such as protectiveness, responsibility, and compassionate leadership. These changes are influenced by factors such as his new family life, meaningful relationships, and a redefined understanding of power. The findings show that Arthur’s character development reflects a process of reconciliation between his past and present identities.
