Abstract
This research departs from an epistemological problem in the development of intertextuality studies within contemporary Qur’anic exegesis, which reveals a tension between modern intertextual theory and the paradigm of revelation in Islam. Julia Kristeva’s theory of intertextuality, on the one hand, provides an analytical framework for understanding intertextual relations and the dynamics of meaning production in interpretation; however, on the other hand, it is often regarded as reductive, as it potentially treats the Qur’an as a merely historical product. The commentary Naẓm al-Durar by Ibrāhīm ibn ʿUmar al-Biqāʿī is significant to examine, as it develops the concept of tanāsub (coherence) as a form of inter-verse and inter-sūrah coherence that bears conceptual proximity to intertextuality. This study aims to analyze the construction of tanāsub in the interpretation of the narratives of Prophet Mūsā and Prophet ʿĪsā, to examine the process of intertextual reading in al-Biqāʿī’s Naẓm al-Durar, and to reconstruct the concept of intertextuality within the epistemological framework of Qur’anic exegesis. This research is a library-based study employing a qualitative-interpretative approach. The primary source is Tafsīr Naẓm al-Durar fī Tanāsub al-Āyāt wa al-Suwar, while secondary sources include literature on intertextuality, Qur’anic exegesis, and ʿUlūm al-Qur’ān.Data analysis is conducted through a hermeneutic-intertextual approach by integrating intertextual theory and the concept of tanāsub as the main conceptual framework for reading textual relations. The analytical technique used is content analysis. The findings indicate that the construction of tanāsub in Naẓm al-Durar functions not only as structural coherence but also as an intertextual mechanism that establishes semantic continuity in the narratives of Prophet Mūsā and Prophet ʿĪsā. In his intertextual reading process, al-Biqāʿī selectively, dialogically, and transformatively employs references from ḥadīth, athār, poetry, the Torah, and the Gospel, while maintaining the Qur’an as the supreme authority. This research produces a novelty that the concept of intertextual tanāsub can be reconstructed as a hermeneutical strategy in Qur’anic interpretation, while also functioning to expand textual meaning.Theoretical implications of this study contribute to the development of an integrative framework between modern intertextual theory and the epistemology of Islamic exegesis through a reconstructed reading model that preserves the authority of the Qur’anic revelation.
