An analysis of digital learning materials to accommodate students from diverse learning readiness in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) class

The development of digital technology in education has encouraged the use of various digital learning materials to support English language learning. One of the most widely used digital learning materials among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners is podcasts, as they provide authentic language exposure, flexibility, and easy accessibility. However, not all podcasts possess characteristics that match students’ diverse levels of learning readiness. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the extent to which BBC Learning English podcasts meet the criteria for accommodating students’ diverse learning readiness. This study employed a qualitative approach with a content analysis design. The data consisted of selected podcasts from three BBC Learning English series, namely The English We Speak, 6 Minute English, and Beating Speaking Anxiety. The analysis was conducted based on three dimensions of learning readiness: cognitive readiness, including speech rate, vocabulary level, and sentence complexity; emotional readiness, including tone, pauses, and repetition; and physical readiness, including audio clarity and duration. The data were analyzed using a content analysis sheet based on low, moderate, and high accommodation categories. The findings revealed that BBC Learning English podcasts demonstrate varying levels of learning readiness accommodation. The podcast Facepalm Moment was categorized as having a low level of accommodation due to its slower speech rate, more common vocabulary, simpler sentence structures, and relatively shorter duration. The podcast Scared to Speak English? was categorized as having a moderate level of accommodation because it displayed balanced characteristics across most of the analyzed aspects. Meanwhile, the podcast I'm Scared of Making Mistakes was categorized as having a high level of accommodation due to its faster speech rate, more complex vocabulary, more sophisticated sentence structures, and longer duration. These findings indicate that BBC Learning English podcasts can serve as digital learning materials that support differentiated instruction by accommodating students with different levels of learning readiness. Therefore, teachers should consider podcast characteristics before integrating them into learning activities to ensure their suitability for students’ readiness levels.
