The implementation of English language program at SMK al Kamal to enrich students' disciplinary vocabulary

Vocabulary serves as the most crucial part of studying English because without vocabulary the students can’t structure their sentences. ELP (English Language Program) as a part of SMK Al Kamal offers effective English learning implemented with any strategies by the tutors. The goal of this study is to determine how an English language program is implemented to increase students' disciplinary vocabulary and to investigate the students' perceptions of the program. This research used a qualitative research design and collected data through interviews and questionnaires. The subjects of this research were 25 students (12 students of 10th grade and 13 students of 11th grade), and 2 English teachers. The result shows that 3 important aspects influence the students’ vocabulary learning. Data from this research show that the program activities included speaking with classmates and listening to audio provided by the tutor. The exam is another component of this program that serves as a gauge of students’ vocabulary growth. Additionally, the questionnaire results showed that 56.2% of the students gave positive responses to the program and stated that the tutor’s strategies helped enrich their vocabulary. Meanwhile, a small percentage of them counted 43,8% responded negatively, those are students who are rather not active with the program and can not follow the program. This finding shows that several students expressed low enthusiasm toward participating in the English Language Program and perceived limited improvement in their disciplinary vocabulary.
