Abstract

Anxiety is one of the affective factors which is essential in a foreign language learning. A great numbers of EFL students in University experience anxiety during their English language classrooms including the ones who are taking English Major. The present study was aimed to determine the levels of students’ ELCA (English Language Classroom Anxiety). Moreover, this study was also aimed to find out the ways that the students do to overcome their ELCA. This study was carried out on 22 undergraduate students of 4th semester in English Education Department, State Islamic University of Sunan Ampel Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia during academic period of 2017/2018. The FLCAS (Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale) and a semi open-ended questionnaire were used to obtain the data. Although the findings show that 91% of the students experience moderate level of ELCA, there was also found a little number of the students who experience high and low level of ELCA. Five kinds of different ways used to overcome students’ ELCA were found as well. They are: a. Developing positive self-talk (self encouragement). This includes positive thinking, trying to be confident, and not thinking of the negative results. b) Relaxation. This includes deep breathing, keep calm and be confident, using nervous laughter. c) Prepare well. This includes prepare the script before presentation, practicing to speak before presentation, and study the previous lesson before taking tests. d) Seek help from others and e) praying to God.
