Abstract

This study conducted based on the speaking problems experienced by elementary teachers toward bilingual program in SD Islam Al-Chusnaini. The research questions for this study are (1) How is the implementation of English language in teaching and learning at SD Islam Al-Chusnaini Sukodono?, (2) What difficulties are encountered by elementary school teachers in speaking English?, (3) How do elementary teachers overcome the difficulties in speaking English?. This study used case study qualitative approach. The researcher used observation and interview to gain the data. The result of this study are; first, the implementation of bilingual program at SD Islam Al-Chusnaini Sukodono was conducted well to reach International standardized school based and to prepare the students face globalization. The teaching model used in accordance with bilingualism is bilingual transitional education, in which rather than fully using English, the teacher decide to use partial English in teaching learning In delivering material teachers most of teachers decide to use Bahasa than English. Second, the difficulties faced by teachers in SD Islam Al-Chusnaini are related with linguistics aspect such as vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. In term of non-linguistic difficulties, most teachers are still nervous when they speak English. Third, In overcoming the difficulties toward speaking English, there are some strategies used by the teachers such as asking for help to other teachers, looking up the dictionary, using gesture, and switching the language into mother tongue.
