Abstract

Memrise, as an educational technology, significantly enhances language learning by fostering an interactive environment and providing students with diverse digital tools and opportunities for more effective mastery of the language. This study aims to explore the findings from various articles regarding the use of Memrise in enhancing students' language skills and their perception of its use. Utilizing a qualitative metasynthesis method, this research reviews and analyzes ten published articles through document analysis techniques. The researcher employed a table analysis instrument adapted from Harper (2018), with further adjustments made for clarity. These findings suggest that using Memrise can enhance language skills that are interrelated with vocabulary mastery. Additionally, the framework established by Hadfield and Hadfield (2008) serves as a benchmark for analyzing how language skills and vocabulary mastery are enhanced. These enhancements manifest as an integration of both receptive and productive skills, although some studies primarily address enhancements in receptive skills. Further, vocabulary mastery encompasses how students record, understand, and use new words effectively. Also, students have expressed diverse perceptions regarding the advantages of using Memrise, despite encountering some disadvantages. Furthermore, with reference to Zhang's (2019) insights on Memrise, the result highlights Memrise's key advantages, including the effectiveness, excellent content presentation and visualization, convenience or flexibility, and increased engagement. However, challenges persist, such as dependence on stable internet connections and distractions from other digital applications. To address these issues, further research is highly recommended to explore and map the affective aspects that can facilitate or hinder teaching and learning activities within the ELT context.
