Abstract
Language style plays an important role in communication, as it reflects socialrelationships, context, and the speakers’ intentions. In sociolinguistics, the use of lagauges style is influenced by several factors such as; participants, setting, context,and the function of the communication process. This study is aimed to identify thetypes of language style used by the main characters in Little Women movie (2019).There are two problems to be solved in this study, they are: (1) what types oflanguage style are used in the conversation among the main characters of LittleWomen movie; (2) what factors Influence the use of different language style by themain characters in the Little women movie.This study used Martin Joos’s theory to classify the types of language style,and used Janet Holmes to analyze the factors. Furthermore, this study usedqualitative approach to provide a clear and systematic explanation of language stylefound in the movie. This study used descriptive analysis to examine theconversations of the main characters in the Little Women movie. The data werecollected by transcribing the Little Women movie from the website Variety. Theresearcher rewatched the Little Women movie to match the dialogue with thetranscript, and then identified the data that characterizes the language style. Thedata were then classified by type using Martin Joos’s theory. The analysis wascontinued by provided a context of the conversation in each data,and gave adetailed explanation. Finally, to answer the second Research question, theresearcher explained which factors Influence the use of language style, based onJanet Holmet’s theory.This study reveals that four language style are used by the main characters:formal style, consultative style, casual style, and intimate style applied in themovie.While the frozen style is not found in the film. The casual style is the mostdominant, followed by intimate style, consultative style, and formal style. In termsof the influencing factors, participants are identified as the most significant factorin shaping language style choices, followed by setting, topic, and function.This study concludes that language style in Little Women movie are primarilyinfluenced by interpersonal relationship and social context. These findingscontributed to sociolinguistics particulary in understanding how language variationreflects identity, emotion, and social dynamics in Movie.
