Abstract

This study is conducted to find out the reliability the most visited English learning websites taken from the site http://english.gotop100.com through evaluation using the criteria of good ESL from some resources. This research was done since not all the English materials in the ESL websites are reliable moreover; they grow enormously in the internet and many the users, especially students use ESL websites as electronic media to learn English.
This study used descriptive qualitative research with content analysis. In content analysis, the instrument is basically the researcher himself because to collect the data, get the sources, and analyze the data depends on the researcher.
In data collection and data analysis, the researcher used the theories of Mathew B. Miles and A. They divided the process of analysis into three phases, consisting of Data Reduction, Data Displays, and Conclusion Drawing/Verification. Data Reduction is the process of sorting, focusing, simplifying, abstracting, and transforming of the raw data. Firstly, the researcher scrutinized, selected and simplified 100 ESL websites from http://english.gotop100.com to be five of most visited English learning websites. The next step, the researcher decided the website evaluation criteria of good ESL websites which had been synthesized according to some theories of designing good websites for ESL from journals in internet. Then, in data displays the researcher began to analyze and evaluate those five ESL websites using website evaluation criteria that have been designed to be website evaluation checklist and description by the researcher previously. The last, the researcher withdrew the conclusion to know which those five websites meet the criteria of good ESL or not.
The findings of this research was expected to provide insight for reader especially teacher, learner and all users of English learning websites to have critical understanding in selecting English learning websites since not all ELT websites are reliable and valid in recent internet.
