Abstract

There have been so many researches conducted research in personality, the writer in this research uses 2 elements of studies, there are language and personality. This study is considered important by the researcher since general knowledge about temperaments is still less considered. The researcher uses the elements of language, that is insult, in this study. The combination of both studies is expected to be able to reveal the behavior of each temperaments against insult and how we appreciate other temperaments. Subjects of this research are Javanese from the writer’s community. The researcher uses 3 categories of insults which also used by Korostelina (2014). The categories are : Insult of Identity, Divergence Insult, Backhanded Compliment. The writer uses such categories since those categories are more applicable in Javanese context. To collect the data, researcher establish a conversation with participants as a data source. While in the conversation, researcher gives questionnaire about temperaments by Littauer (1983) as a distraction that if the participants would not realize if their data is taken which their reactions are natural. To answer research questions and get final result, the researcher uses; Locution and Perlocution, Gestures and interpretation of participant’s reactions during conversation using theory of temperaments by Littauer (1983). This study shows that participant with sanguine temperament tend to use verbal reaction and react stronger to insult about their personal uniqueness. Participants with phlegmatic temperament tend to give agreement towards insult, participants with this temperament give no objection to every insult statements given by the researcher. For emotional reaction, this participants react weakly towards insults. In the other hand, participants with choleric temperaments give strong reactions towards insults that they often give objections and orders to statements from the writer. The last, participants with melancholic temperaments tend to give weak reactions towards insult. They also tend to give weak emotional reactions since melancholic have a problem in expressing their feelings.
