Abstract

Student with different ability (Tuna Grahita) is a concept referring to a person who has mental retardation. This study focuses on teaching English as a second language for the students with different ability at SMPLB Siswa Budhi, Surabaya. According to the problem of the study, the writer purpose to: 1. Describe what are the techniques used at that school to teach their students in English. 2. Describe how those English teaching techniques are implemented to make students with different ability understand English and have a good effect for the students with different ability at SMPLB Siswa Budhi, Surabaya. This study is descriptive qualitative. It uses some of data collection techniques like observation, interview, questionnaire, and documentation. This study finds some of techniques used by an English teacher at SMPLB Siswa Budhi, Surabaya they are; explanation, discussion, using picture, Drill and using reward. From those five techniques, the researcher finds that using picture is the most popular and becomes a favorite technique. Those all techniques are used by teacher to make the students with different ability fun, interested and understand English as their second language. It is prove that all of technique used by English teacher is successful. Those techniques get good response from students with different ability. They understand maximally, and can be fun with English. Furthermore all of students want to learn English. This means that the techniques used by teacher can stimulate new students' motivation. It can be said that the techniques have good response. About the implementation of those techniques above, teacher uses a simple way in teaching due to the characteristics of students with different ability. Students with different ability need something that simple. The conclusions of this study are; English teacher at SMPLB Siswa Budhi, Surabaya implements some of techniques in teaching English as a second language for her students with different ability especially on Tuna Grahita students at seventh grade. She implements her techniques by a simple way to make them easily understand her teaching. Then, the result of those techniques is good. This means that the techniques give good response from the students.
