Abstract

This study aims to analyze the multimodality contained in the content of the Instagram account belonging to the World Health Organization with the account name @who. The account contains content about health in general. However, since the start of the pandemic season in 2019, this account has regularly uploaded content related to information about COVID-19. In this case, the various uploaded contents contain information that addressed to the account's followers with various designs. Therefore, the researcher answered some research questions related to problems in the public's understanding of the information submitted from the WHO Instagram Account. Some of the research questions answered were as many as two questions, namely 1) what verbal and visual elements are in the @who Instagram account and 2) How is the implied meaning conveyed through collaboration between the verbal and visual elements. This study used a qualitative approach related to the description of the data analysis. This qualitative approach is carried out to analyze how the implied meaning is formed from verbal and visual structures. First, the researcher collected the data by selecting data with the theme of COVID-19 to identify the verbal and visual elements. After collecting the verbal and visual elements, the researcher analyzed each element using Kress and Leeuwen's theory to find the representative of language metafunction’s components. The results of the study found that there were 60 verbal elements and 62 visual elements. These verbal and visual elements were found in several categories, such as phrases and sentences, which were included in the verbal element, and the colour and illustration categories included in the visual element. Based on the verbal and visual elements, the term multimodality was found based on Kress and Leeuwen. The rest, the multimodality analysis, is studied using the theory of language metafunction. It produces messages through instructions, information, and prohibitions that must be carried out during the COVID-19 pandemic season. In addition, the results of the language metafunction analysis also revealed how the role of creators and viewers through a design that conveys this information becomes a provider of information and who is given information about COVID-19. In addition, the researcher also found that the content design of the World Health Organization's Instagram account has a design that is considered easy to understand by the public by analyzing the verbal and visual elements from each data used the language metafunction data. Although, there are still designs that are less effective in presenting information delivery about COVID-19 because the use of verbal elements and visual elements that are too complicated.
