Abstract

This study is focused on the story of Daenerys Targaryen as one of the main characters in the novel A Game of Thrones. The novel is a colossal story created by George R.R. Martin, who introduces many characters in his books. Despite the number of characters, the main focus of the storyline is on Daenerys Targaryen. In this case, the researcher pursues the character's journey from a clueless highborn princess to becoming a leader of a tribe. Practically, the writer expects that this study would give insight into becoming a strong independent woman. Besides, it shows Daenerys’ struggle for being forced to marry by her brother and does not dare to fight until she becomes a leader and is recognized by her people. Daenerys’ story is relatable to most human problems in real life, so it could encourage the readers to choose a positive way to face their problem and have the courage to take action. The research uses a descriptive qualitative method to gain a complete explanation through the book. A descriptive study in the textual analysis was applied to analyze the character’s development through A Game of Thrones book. Also, New Criticism is used as the method to stay focused on the storyline. The data were collected by reading the whole novel, then focusing on parts related to Daenerys Targaryen. The analysis was continued by selecting the plots that answered the statement of the problems. As a result, the story about Daenerys Targaryen explains how to deal with great problems in life and understand some ways to become an independent and confident woman. From the statement of the problems, this study breaks down that a capable leader needs great sacrifices and be prepared to lose things people might love. In return, Daenerys becomes the first distinct khalasar leader in history.
