Abstract
A pioneering study by Dronberger and Kowitz (1975) shows that the abstract is easier to read than the full document. Globalization makes people want to write articles not only for national recognition but also for international recognition. By using Swales and Feak's framework (2004) for abstract rhetorical move analysis and Hyland's metadiscourse model (2005), this study aims to show the rhetorical moves and metadiscourse markers used by Indonesian EFL writers and Native English Writers (NEW) when writing research articles (RA). The data were taken from the NOBEL for Indonesian EFL abstracts and sciencedirectJournals for NEW abstracts. Differences between the two groups could be due to different writers' skills, different potential readers, a different discourse community, or a cultural trait. Also, this comparative study is meant to add to the abstract rhetorical move and metadiscourse study with two different linguistic and cultural backgrounds of writers, which hasn't been done much in Indonesia. It should also help new writers who want to write abstracts for international publishing
