Abstract
The study is aimed at investigating politeness in Kamala Harris' speech in Singapore on US vision for Indo-Pacific region video which shows the politeness strategies occurring in Kamala Harris' speech. Kamala Harris is a trailblazing figure in American politics, known for her graciousness and polite demeanor in public interactions. Whether engaging with colleagues, constituents, or adversaries, she maintains a poised and respectful approach, emphasizing collaboration and civility in political discourse. Her courteous demeanor underscores her commitment to diplomacy and constructive dialogue, fostering an environment conducive to problem-solving and mutual understanding. There are two problems to be solved in this study, namely: (1) What are the politeness strategies used by Kamala Harris in carrying out the speech about the US vision for Indo-Pacific Region and (2) What are the functions of the Kamala Harris' politeness strategies in her speech about the US vision for the Indo-Pacific Region. This study uses the qualitative approach in relation to the use of clear and systematic descriptions about the phenomena recorded. A descriptive study in textual analysis was applied in this study to analyze Kamala Harris' speech in Singapore on US vision for Indo-Pacific region video through the script. The data were collected by first transcribing Kamala Harris' speech video. The transcription was checked to determine the types of politeness using relevant codes in the appropriate parts of the text. The next step in this analysis are to determine the function of the politeness strategy used in Kamala Harris' speech video. The research results reveal that Kamala Harris used every strategy called politeness in her speech in Singapore on US vision for Indo-Pacific region video. In this context, positive politeness strategies are most commonly used. Researcher found that Kamala Harris used 18 utterances, each of which contained Positive Politeness, Negative Politeness, Off Record, and Bald On Record. Then the most frequently found function of politeness strategies in Kamala Harris’ speech is promising politeness which shows that Kamala Harris’ uses politeness strategies to making commitments, assurances, or pledges in a way that demonstrates sincerity, trustworthiness, and a positive intention.
