Abstract
The study is aimed to analyze the illocutionary speech acts that contain the meaning of individual liberty in the main character's utterances in the 'Cruella' movie. The researcher proposes two research problems, including: (1) What are the types of illocutionary acts portraying individual liberty used by the main character Cruella; (2) What are the types of individual liberty portrayed in the Illocutionary acts used by the main character Cruella.
This study used a qualitative approach method by using the speech act theory by John Searle and the individual liberty theory by Isaiah Berlin. The research data was in the form of utterances. The researcher collected the data by matching the movie script text and dialogues in the movie. The data were analyzed by identifying the types of illocutionary acts uttered by Cruella as the main character using IFID. Then, the researcher identified and highlighted the utterances portraying individual liberty. After that, the researcher presented the data in a data table by applying suitable coding. The analysis continued by interpreting the data based on the theory applied.
The results of this study show that there are 30 data of illocutionary acts that have the meaning of individual liberty including all types of illocutionary acts (assertive speech acts, declarative speech acts, commissive speech acts, expressive speech acts, and directive speech acts) and all types of individual liberty (positive liberty and negative liberty) are applied by Cruella's character in this movie. The data obtained in this study amounted to 30 data with 15 assertive speech acts, 1 declarative speech acts, 7 commissive speech acts, 1 expressive speech act, and 6 directive speech acts. Then, in a total of 30 data, there are 23 data containing positive individual liberty, and 7 data containing negative individual liberty. In this study, it is found that the most frequent type of illocutionary acts that portray individual liberty is the assertive speech act. In addition, this study reveals that the most dominant type of individual liberty in Cruella as the main character is positive liberty. So, Cruella's assertive speech act has the meaning of conveying something related to the truth of the proposition expressed regarding the injustice in her life, the death of her adoptive mother, and wanting to have her own fashion name so that Cruella's character emphasizes positive individual liberty which aims to take revenge and punish the Baroness by using the abilities and opportunities she has to achieve her desires.
