Abstract

This research aims to investigate the Metaphors of Love's Suffering in the album After Hours by The Weeknd through Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT). The songs in this album convey various emotions that the singer wants to communicate to the listeners, but the researcher found that the album is predominantly characterized by metaphors of love's suffering, such as Disappointment, Loneliness, Venting, and others. Therefore, this study addresses the following research questions: (1) What are the types of conceptual metaphors about the suffering of love found in The Weeknd's After Hours album? (2) How the theme of suffering of love implied in the after-hours album by The Weeknd through conceptual analysis of metaphors. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach to obtain systematic and clear descriptive results regarding the research questions. A descriptive study in textual analysis was applied in this research to analyze the metaphors in the song lyrics of the album After Hours by The Weeknd. The researcher used the website lyricfind.com to help collect the song lyrics, which were then analyzed by identifying types of Conceptual Metaphors such as Ontological, Structural, and Orientational Metaphors through Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT). The study results show that there are 62 ontological metaphors, 14 structural metaphors, and 16 orientational metaphors, with a total of 92 conceptual metaphors. Metaphors of love's suffering were also found in this research, with the results showing five main types: love is delirium, love is regret, love is venting, love is loneliness, and love is drugs.
